What is a scar cover-up tattoo?

A scar cover-up is a tattoo worked over scarred skin so the scar becomes part of a new design. The scar itself does not disappear – it stays where it is. What changes is what the eye sees first: the tattoo, not the scar. We work over scars from surgery, C-sections, accidents and burns, as well as over stretch marks. Whether it works in your case depends on the condition of the tissue – and that is exactly what we assess before anything is tattooed.

Can you tattoo over scars?

In most cases, yes. But scar tissue behaves differently from healthy skin: it takes ink unevenly, is less elastic, and holds more pigment in some spots and less in others. That is why a tattoo on a scar needs a different technique – slower, with adjusted pressure and a design that forgives small irregularities. Fine, even lines over uneven tissue are risky; designs built on texture, shading and contrast work far more reliably.

When is a scar ready for a tattoo?

As a rule of thumb: at least twelve months, and often closer to eighteen or twenty-four. What matters is not the date but the condition. The scar should be flat, pale and calm – no longer red, no longer raised, not itching, and with no feeling of tension. We do not tattoo over fresh scars: the tissue is still remodelling, the result would change over time and, at worst, healing could be disrupted. If you are unsure, send us a photo – it is often clear from that alone whether it makes sense or whether we would advise you to wait.

Which scars can be covered – and which cannot?

Flat, faded scars cover well: surgical scars, C-section scars, scars from accidents, and stretch marks. It gets harder with raised, shiny or very hard scars, and with burn scars where the skin is thin. For keloids – scars that grow beyond the original wound – we recommend speaking to a doctor before we tattoo. If we do not consider an area suitable, we will say so, rather than promise a result that will not hold.

Which designs and styles work on scars?

Styles built on depth and contrast work best: blackwork, black & grey and realism. Floral and organic motifs, ornaments and mandalas are also strong choices, because they allow plenty of creative freedom and absorb irregularities. Line direction matters: a design that follows the direction of the scar, instead of cutting across it, reads more calmly and draws the eye away from the edge. Very fine line work is something we only recommend to a limited extent on scarred tissue.

C-section scars, surgical scars and stretch marks

Most enquiries concern the stomach. A C-section scar runs horizontally and low – designs that deliberately pick up that line and open upwards sit best here. After a pregnancy you should wait until your weight and abdominal wall have settled, otherwise the design will distort. Stretch marks are not strictly scars, but they behave similarly under the needle: the surface is uneven while the skin stays soft. Large-area designs with texture cover better here than small individual motifs.

Tattooing scars in skin tone – what camouflage can and cannot do

A question we get often: can a scar simply be tattooed over in a skin tone? That is a separate discipline – scar camouflage, or paramedical pigmentation – and it works differently from a classic tattoo. Skin-toned pigment does not age like the surrounding skin, it shifts as you tan, and it needs regular refreshing. For most scars, a designed cover-up is the more honest and more durable result.

The route is always the same: you send us a well-lit photo of the area via WhatsApp or Instagram. We assess whether and how it works, and invite you to a consultation. There we go through the design, size and process, and you receive a draft that we adjust until it feels right for you. We only start tattooing once you have approved it. For larger areas we plan several sessions from the outset – better one appointment more than a result that does not cover.
