What is a cover-up tattoo?

A cover-up is the art of completely covering an existing tattoo with a new design. Instead of having your old or unwanted tattoo removed, we create a new design over it that picks up the old lines and turns them into something of its own. Whether it is an unloved youth tattoo, a faded motif or a name that no longer fits – with the right concept, a lot can be turned into a tattoo you like again. What matters is an honest assessment upfront, and that is exactly what we take time for in the consultation.

Covering an old tattoo – how does a cover-up work?

With a cover-up the old tattoo is not removed but overlaid by a new, usually larger design. So the old lines disappear completely, a cover-up works with stronger contrasts, darker areas and well-considered shapes that skilfully integrate the old tattoo. How well this works depends on the size, colour, age and saturation of the existing tattoo: a small, light motif is easier to cover than a large, very dark one. We clarify your options together in a personal consultation – honestly and without false promises.

Which styles work for a cover-up?

Cover-ups work especially well in blackwork, black & grey and realism, because these styles use depth, shading and contrast and so reliably hide old lines. Floral motifs, ornaments or organic shapes are also excellent choices, as they offer plenty of creative freedom. Our artists develop a design that deliberately integrates the existing tattoo instead of merely hiding it – the result is not a visible patch but a standalone, coherent new tattoo.

Covering scars & dark tattoos

Older, very dark tattoos or areas of skin with scarring can often be concealed too – here experience and the right concept matter most. For heavily saturated motifs it can make sense to work in several sessions or to lighten the old tattoo first. Send us a well-lit photo of the area in advance via WhatsApp or Instagram, so we can realistically assess what is possible and how best to proceed.

Cover-up ideas & the path to the finished design

Not sure about the motif yet? That is completely normal. Bring references, screenshots or rough ideas – from these we develop a concept together that suits your body area and the old tattoo. You receive a draft that we adjust until it feels right for you. We only start tattooing once you have approved it. If a particular style does not work for your cover-up, we will tell you honestly and suggest a fitting alternative.
